Literature, music and performance by Spanish-Caribbean writers Rey Emmanuel Andújar (Dominican Republic) and Carlos Vázquez Cruz (Puerto Rico). Event curated by Rafael Franco Steeves for the Guild Literary Complex in Chicago. In this occasion Andújar and I alternated to read from our previous works, and–in my case–to sing a few of the Spanish-American pop songs that influenced “Disco-grafía” (Discography), the final part of my collection of poems Ares (2014), in which every work has been “composed” entirely with phrases “borrowed” from the particular singers mentioned under the title of each poem. We bring the event to an end together merging literature and music. Andújar recites one of his own pieces while I join him in specific moments singing one of his stanzas as a refrain until we both finish harmoniously.
